My Two Cents
I can tell you right off the bat that I love photography.
Whether sharing a moment with two people beginning their life together, or aimlessly exploring a foreign city, I am at my happiest when I have a camera in my hand.
Graduating from Nauset Regional High School on Cape Cod in 2005, the next few years of my life were defined by travel, family, and a degree in History from Salem State College. I studied abroad in New Zealand before graduating and moving to Maine in 2010. My camera came with me.
Photographing weddings is a very personal endeavor, and getting to know clients is important to me. If you’re seeking me out, you already know that I strive for the authentic moments; the pictures that tell the whole story. Getting those moments on film (as it were) means being a relaxed and fun person to work with - and I carry that attitude into every wedding assignment.
Documentary-style photography is different from traditional wedding photography. It almost isn’t a style so much as it’s an approach; one that places emphasis on the narrative. This lends it an aesthetic that can tell a story naturally, and beautifully.
On wedding day, many photographers depend on directing people to capture the images they want. This can mean an emphasis on telling people where to stand, what to do and how to properly look at one another. This is not my cup of tea! To me, being a documentary-style photographer means hanging back from the action, and being ready to capture those images as they occur.
While I approach the majority of the day in a documentary style, I understand that it’s important to have some posed group portraits and am happy to take those on the day. I also recommend spending about 20–30 minutes at some point during the day where we go for a wander and take some informal portraits of just the two of you.
What Clients Say…
“James was great to work with. He provided great guidance on what he thought would make a great picture and captured our wedding beautifully. He was in the moment. James made us feel like we had known him our whole life and part of our family. James was a crucial part of our day and we are so happy that we found him!”
— Katie and Josh, July 2017
“We are so happy we found James to be our wedding photographer. In planning and on the day of, we loved his flexible, easy-going nature. He was always looking for the best light and angles and clearly avoided anything that could look staged. As we were going through the photos, we were baffled by how James seemed to be everywhere at once but we barely noticed. He let us be ourselves and it showed in the end result. I can’t say enough about how amazing the photos came out and how perfectly he captured the day. His work is fantastic and he clearly loves what he does. I highly recommend James!!”
— Ashley and Brendan, June 2018
“From the very beginning James was wonderful to work with! We knew from our first conversation with him that he was going to make this wedding process as smooth as possible. James is professional, attentive, and fun to work with. He was very flexible when it came to timing and planning. He climbed over rocks and stayed out in the cold rain to make sure we got our perfect shots. We would recommend him to anyone! Thank you James for all you have done!”
